Deja Vu

Posted by on August 26, 2009 at 9:22 am.

It’s 9:08am and I’m clicking refresh on the Island Reef Job site every 30 seconds. I wonder how rich I’d be if I got a $1 from every time I refreshed the page this year. I’d probably be able to afford an Island Caretaker lifestyle for a month.

Best Job in the World Follow-Up

Marcella, Erik and I got to spend some quality time in Vancouver and we were able to chat with Mitch and Linda on Skype video a few months ago too. This week I was able to meet two more of the Top 50 candidates for the Best Job in the World (James and Greg), as well as everyone from Tourism Queensland! :D

Not Talking with Dean Horvath

Posted by on April 19, 2009 at 5:03 pm.

I phoned Mason Horvath twice this past week asking to speak with Dean, and both times he was “in a meeting.” I left a message on Tuesday asking him to e-mail me with his schedule of availability for the interview. He never did. I find it a bit surprising that he’s suddenly become so busy, especially after a Facebook message I received from an old classmate that I haven’t seen or spoken to in years. This classmate wrote to me asking what my thoughts were on the “next best job” campaign saying that he was curious about the position so he went to the Mason Horvath office and spoke with Dean Horvath in person. Funny how Dean has the time to speak with anyone who walks in off the street but doesn’t have the time to e-mail me a reply. I suspect he’s trying to avoid me. :P

Talking with Dean Horvath

I just got off the phone with Dean Horvath from Mason Horvath, the company that created the “next best job” campaign. It sounds like he’s gotten a lot of flak about this campaign.

I told him that there would be no conflict of interest in doing an interview with me since I have publicly announced that I will not be a participant in the “next best job” campaign, and asked him for his schedule of availability. Understandably, he has to first consult his PR firm, Curve Communications.

In 500 Words or Less

Posted by on April 2, 2009 at 4:19 pm.

As part of the application process for the Best Job in the World, Tourism Queensland asked each of the Top 50 candidates to write a short story (300 – 500 words) answering the following:

1. A little about your background, previous employment, family, where you live
2. What is most important to you in life
3. If successful in gaining The Best Job in the World with Tourism Queensland, who will be joining you on your journey to the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef (partner and / or children and tell us a little about them)
4. Anything else you would like to share about yourself
I had wanted to post my “story” on here right after writing it, but Tourism Queensland informed me that applicants should keep their stories to themselves until the reveal of the next shortlist. Now that the cat’s outta the bag, here’s my story. Enjoy! :)

A Shocking Announcement from Tourism Queensland

Posted by on April 2, 2009 at 12:44 am.

I was making my own little list of who I thought would be chosen for the remaining Top 10 candidates tonight and finding it rather difficult. As it turns out, Tourism Queensland was having a rather hard time with it too! So, in a shocking last minute turn of events, they’ve announced that they will be selecting a FIFTEEN candidates (in addition to Clare — Wild Card Winner) instead of the original ten!! I LOVE IT!! Oh Tourism Queensland, you’re always keeping us on our toes!

What Are the Chances?!

What a race! For days I had been trying to move past Gina from Korea on the Wild Card Leaderboard. 206 votes away… 175 votes away… 11 votes away! And then finally two days ago I was ONE vote above her and in the coveted #23 spot!! Oh it was a happy moment. ;)

Testing out Tim Tams

I’m sure Arnott’s sales have gone through the roof since the start of Tourism Queensland’s campaign for the Best Job in the World! There have been so many blog posts about these little chocolate biscuits that I, like many others before me, succumbed to my curiousity and went to London Drugs yesterday to buy some.

The Best Sister in the World

Posted by on March 17, 2009 at 11:00 pm.

The Top 50 candidates for the Best Job in the World were asked by Tourism Queensland to write a short story / mini essay (300 – 500 words) which answered several questions. One question read “If successful in gaining The Best Job in the World with Tourism Queensland, who will be joining you on your journey to the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef?”

If I am lucky enough to be hired for the Best Job in the World, I would without a doubt, take my sister Angela! Ang is eight years older than me and has always been someone I look up to.

Inspired by the ’25 Random Things’ Facebook note that I keep getting tagged in, I decided I’d write 25 Random Reasons why she’s the best sister I could’ve ever hoped for…

Skydiving for YOUR votes!

Posted by on March 13, 2009 at 8:36 pm.

Yesterday, Peter Kim from Shaw TV’s The Express came over to do an interview with me for the show. If you’ve ever watched The Express though, you know they don’t like to do just a regular interview! After we filmed the interview, captured some footage of Julie the guinea pig, and shot some bits of me twittering and responding to comments on my blog, Peter sent me to Skydive Vancouver to jump >10,000 ft out of a perfectly good airplane and prove that I’m adventurous and willing to do just about anything for the Best Job in the World! This one’s for YOU and YOUR VOTES!
