The day the Top 50 candidates for the Best Job in the World were announced, I was asked what I would do to celebrate and I had absolutely no clue. My answer: “cake?”
Well, I didn’t end up having cake. There was no time for cake! Instead, I celebrated by going on a media blitz which was way better than cake (everyone that knows me is probably gasping right now lol). After going on a round of interviews on day 2 though, Ang, Morten and I decided to treat ourselves to Japadogs.
What’s a Japadog? A Japadog is a hot dog with Japanese toppings like dried seaweed, fish flakes, wasabi mayo, fried cabbage, teriyaki sauce, horseradish, miso-sesame sauce, and green onion. Japadogs are very popular in Vancouver — so much so that they’ve opened a second stand.
We waited over half an hour for our dogs, and to be honest, I was severely disappointed. I had planned to blog about it because Japadog is one of those things that’s unique to Vancouver and a local favourite. But alas, I was still on my vegetarian kick and as I found out, their veggie dogs are naaaaasssstty. I didn’t even finish it. And what’s worse is that when I was waiting for my dog, the girl who was making it dropped half of the hot dog on the ground and passed the remaining half on to the girl who was putting on toppings who giggled and motioned just to give it to me anyways. I was really surprised. I mean really, I’m RIGHT THERE. Watching! When she tried to hand me the dog, I asked “isn’t that the hot dog that just fell on the ground?” She giggled, apologized and made me a new one. Still, not cool. Anyways, that’s why I didn’t blog about it. I wasn’t impressed.
Today was a rainy day in Vancouver, but Ang and I stopped for Japadogs anyways. Why? Because apparently when it rains, there’s no line-up! We were very excited — especially since I could eat a real Japadog this time! We circled the block to find parking and happily ran to the original Japadog stand on Burrard St. It took less than 10 minutes to pay and get our Okonomi and Cheese Terimayo (new flavour) hot dogs this time, and when we took a picture to commemorate the moment, the Japadog guy snuck in the photo with a peace sign. Haha! Nice guy. I bet he wouldn’t try to give me only half a dog!
If you come to visit Vancouver, you’ve gotta try a Japadog! YUM!
