Those of you who know me (and that’s pretty much anyone who’s actually reading my blog) know that I’m a meat and carbs kinda gal who likes to binge on fast food and anything that’s bad for you. Right now though, all I really want is a ceasar salad and some raw broccoli!
It appears that the Russians don’t eat anything leafy and the closest thing to vegetables that you can get is a cabbage roll or maybe some cucumber in your salad. I’ve been surviving in the cities on potato-based foods (I never know what the dumplings or rolls or dishes are filled with so I just point and so far it’s always been potato!) with some meat and bread and on the train I’ve been barely surviving on instant noodles, tea, and biscuits. I had bought a bag of biscuits in Vladivostok just before I left for 35p (just over $1) and I just finished them today. They’ve been a total lifesaver and probably the best thing I’ve bought since I arrived.
I had realized how green-deprived I really was when I arrived in Irkutsk and actually ate some of the lettuce garnish on my fish platter. It was soooo good. lol I was a bit embarassed about it though so I tried to cover up the corner I had nibbled on with a napkin when I left.
So friends and family, when you pick me up at the airport please bring with you some clean raw broccoli for me to eat and let’s go to Red Robin for their soup and salad combo. You can have the soup.
